We had our baby Hugo blessed. We invited our friends from school and ward to join this special occasion. Hugo was only 3 weeks old that day. And we felt this was a little too early for Hugo to go outside, since my mother-in-law, Mihono, was leaving to go back to Japan the next day, we made Hugo persevere through it. He did a good job though. This is what we call dutiful grandson.
幼児の祝福があり、学校の友人達や、ワードの人達にもお手伝いしていだたいた。拓賢君はまだ3週間目で、外に出るのはさすが、大変かと思われたが、美保乃お義母さんが次の日に帰ってしまうので、拓賢君には少し頑張ってもらった。良い子にしてくれて、まぁ、これで祖母孝行ということであろうか。

Knowles family, who converted Masami's family into Church, drove all the way from Ogden for 2 hours to join this occasion. So this day was very special day for Mihono.
正美ちゃんの両親を改宗させたノールズ家もわざわざ、2時間かけてオグデンから来てくれた。美保乃お義母さんにとって、とても特別な日だった。

We had a ward day camp. The ward was divided into Japanese team, Foreign team and the Single Adult team and they competed against each other to see who makes the best meal. For some reasons, I was one of the judges. They did this activity with "Iron Chef" style and the host was really into it. So I don't think I need to mention how exciting this whole event was.
ワードのデイ・キャンプがあった。日本人チーム、外人チーム、そして独身チームに分かれて、どのチームが一番美味しい料理を作ったか、競い合うのだ。何故か自分は審判の一人だった。料理の鉄人みたく、司会もかなり気合い入れてやってくれたので、盛り上がりもただ単に並ではなかったことは言わなくても、想像していただけると思う。

The winning team was the Japanese team. The foreign team's meal was so good, I thought, but I guess other judges thought the Japanese team did better. The Single adults brought the spirit into this activity; I think they were the ones that had most fun.
勝ったチームは日本人チーム。外人チームもいいところまで行ったが、日本人チームには負けていたらしい。独身チームも若いスピリッツがあって、彼らが一番盛り上がっていた。青春である。
There was only one place that I wanted my mother-in-law, who came to Utah for the first time, to see in Utah; the Salt Lake City Temple and the Temple Square. The Hess couple took us there. Thanks!
ユタに初めて来た美保乃お義母さんにとって、絶対行って欲しい所はソルト・レーク・シティにあるテンプル・スクウェアとソルト・レーク神殿だった。ヘス家に態々連れていってもらった。ありがとう。
It becomes so usual once you get used to living in Utah, but for the first-timers the fact that the Church buildings are everywhere seems to be a mind blowing. My mother-in-law would scream "Look, look!! There's church building here and more church building there!!" every time we transport to somewhere with a car. Sure, when I visited Utah for the first time, I was blown away by the fact that there were so many church buildings and that there is a Salt Lake Temple right in my eyes.
ユタに住んでいると、当たり前になってしまうのだが、教会の建物はユタのどこにいってもたくさんある。お義母さんは車に乗って移動するたびに、『ウァー、友君。こっちにも教会。あっちにも教会があるよ(熊本弁のイントネーションで)』と言う。確かに自分も初めてユタに来た時は教会がたくさんあることにビックリしたし、写真でしか見たことがないソルト・レーク神殿が目の前にあらわれた時は、信じられなかった程である。

Now that I think about it, the first time I ever visited Utah was 8 years ago; a Summer before the Winter Olympics in Utah. I was going to a high school in England at the time, and I was contemplating on going to Brigham Young University for my College and I wanted to make a visit. So using the long Summer break from school, I flew from England to Chicago, and then Chicago to Utah. By the way, at that time, my parents were living in Singapore, so once I was done visiting Utah, I flew to California, then to Japan, and then to Singapore. Then when the Summer break finished, I flew from Singapore to Bangkok, and then to England. So I made a Around the World
trip that Summer.
思えば、自分が初めてユタに来たのは、さかのぼって8年前になる。ユタで冬オリンピックが行なわれた年の一年前の夏に訪問したのだ。私はその時ちょうどイギリスの高校イーストボーンで寮生活していた。ブリガム・ヤング大学に入学したいと思っていたので、一回は見学したいなと、思っていたので、長い夏休みを利用して、行かせてもらった。イギリスからチカゴへ飛び、チカゴからユタへ飛んだのだ。ちなみにその時、両親はシンガポールだったので、ユタの後、カリフォルニアに飛び、そこから日本に飛んで、シンガポールへ飛んだ。夏休みが終わったあとは、シンガポールから、バンコクへ。そしてバンコクからイギリスに飛んだのだから、その夏は世界一周したと言ってもいい。
My oldest brother Katsu had also finished his missionary service in Nevada state, so he met me up in Utah to look around. Man, it really has been 8 years?
その時はちょうど、兄のカツもネバダ州での伝道を終えて、ユタで私と落ち合い、ユタを一緒に見回った。懐かしい。あれからもう8年か。
Anyway, I'm trailing off... We first did a session at the temple, then we toured around the Temple Square. Aya served her mission in Temple Square so she escorted all areas in the limited time. Thanks! My mother-in-law made sure she took plenty of pictures to remember the good time she had.
そんな事はさておいて...先ずは神殿のセッションに行ったあとに、テンプル・スクウェアのまわりを観光。テンプル・スクウェアで伝道した綾ちゃんにエスコートされて、お義母さんは大満足!写真をとりまくって、思い出たくさん作りました。ありがとう!
And of course, on the way home, we was still shouting "Look, look!! There's more church builing!!" Now that is Utah!
帰り道でもお義母さんは、『ウァー、友君。こっちにも教会。あっちにも教会があるよ(熊本弁のイントネーションで)』と言っていた。さすがユタである。
Oquirrh Mountain Temple Open House... and some Utah Mountain Views (オーカー・マインテン神殿のオープンハウス...とユタの山々たち)
We went to Oquirrh Mountain Temple Open House with my mother-in-law, Mihono. I have already written about the Temples for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in my past blog. I don't I need further explanation.
美保乃お義母さんを連れてオーカー・マインテン神殿のオープンハウスに行ってきた(Kazutoさん、ありがとう)。今年の3月にドレーパー神殿が奉献されて、その事についてはすでにブログで書いたので、末日聖徒イエス・キリスト教会の神殿についての説明はいるまい。
We went on the weekday at about 10AM but there were lots of people already. And by the time we finished looking around (12PM Noon), there were long line of people like in the Disneyland.
週日の朝10時に行ったのだが、すでに人がいっぱいいたし、終わったとき(正午12時)には、外には長い列がディズニーランドのようにズラーっと作られていた。

After we finished looking through the temple, our friend Kazuto took us to the to of the hill where we could see a good view of Utah County. We had not been able to take my mother-in-law for driving or camping so this was a good opportunity for her. Thanks Kazuto!
神殿を見終わった帰りに、Kazutoさんが眺めの良い山の上に連れていってくれた。赤ちゃんの拓賢君がいるので、美保乃お義母さんをキャンプや、ドライブに連れていくチャンスがなかったので、良い寄り道だった。ありがとう。
On 3 August, My mother-in-law Mihono flew back to Japan (Thanks to Justin for the ride). Mihono had been here since 4 July; that makes a month stay in Utah. Her purpose of coming to Utah was to help with our baby so she could not get around Utah much. We were, however, able to visit Oquirrh Mountain temple open house and do a session in the Salt Lake City Temple (I plan on posting these later sometime). SO I'd say she had fair amount of touring.
8月3日に美保乃お義母さんがソルト・レーク国際空港から日本に帰った。(ジャスティン送ってくれてありがとう)。7月4日からユタにいたから丁度一ヶ月いたことになる。産後のお手伝いのために来てくださったので、せっかくの初めてのユタの訪問なのにあまり色々観光に連れて行くことはできなかったが、最後にオーカー・マウンテン神殿のオープン・ハウスや、ソルト・レーク神殿のセッションや、テンプル・スクウェアを堪能してもらえたので、よかったと思う(オープン・ハウスなどの写真などはまたいつか載せようと思う)。

Mihono did so much things for us: laundry, bathing Hugo, changing diaper, etc, while I was at school doing some work. But I think she helped my wife more than she helped Hugo. Her just being there helped Masami stay relaxed mentally.
ご飯も作ってくれたり、僕が仕事などで家にいることができないときはお義母さんが洗濯物や、家の掃除だけではなく、拓賢君のお風呂や、おむつ換えなど色々やってくれた。お義母さんにはうちの拓賢君以上に正美ちゃんが助けられたと思う。一緒にいてくれただけで精神的に安心できたし。
It seems like there is a hole in our house now that she is gone. But we both feel that this is our reality and we need to face it. Thanks Mihono!
彼女が帰ってしまって、家の中に何か穴が開いたような気がする。でも、これからが本番なんだな、と思う。お義母さんありがとう。
As many of you already know, we bought a car few weeks ago. Some people have asked "Is this a new car." No, it's a used car, bought with very affordable price. But I don't blame them; the car has only ran 21,000 miles so far (approximately 3400km). At first, I thought an old person must have bought it and had rarely drove it before he/she passed away. It turns out, actually, that, according to the dealer, the car was bought from an auction. So my best guess is someone went bankrupt and was confiscated. This car has never been in an accident.
ご存知の人も多いが、数週間前に車を買った。何人かにすでに聞かれたが、この車は新車ではない。安い値段で買った中古車である。しかし、中古車に見えないのはしょうがない。何故なら2.1万マイルしか走っていないからである(約3.4万km)。
最初は年とった人達が買って、あまり乗らなかったものを売っているかと思ったが、ディーラーの人はオークションで買った、と言っていた。たぶん、個人破産で没収させられたのであろう。事故にはあったことないらしい。

Enough about the car... We love this car though. I wanted a reliable Japanese car, and even though this is a sedan, it acts like hatchback (which we wanted but couldnt afford) because the back seat could be reclined all the way back. It feels good to drive it. No weird noise, no scratch yet. A friend mine took a good look at the engine and said that it's almost in the perfect condition. We were so lucky.
まぁ、この車の歴史はどうでもいいとして...この車はかなり気に入っている。安心できる日本の車が欲しかったし、セダンなのに後ろの席が倒れて、ハッチバックみたいになるのである。乗り心地も良い。変な音もしないし、傷もない。友人にエンジンはスッゴイ完璧な状態って言われた。本当、恵まれたもんである。
